In 2010, NRPA will fund ten park and recreation agencies at $35,000 each to develop coalitions of local stakeholders and community leaders to address chronic disease risk factors of physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and tobacco use.
With an ACHIEVE grant, agencies will:
Reduce the incidence of chronic disease through policy, systems and environmental change strategies at the local level
Create partnerships with community stakeholders
Attend meetings with national leaders to learn about tools, resources, and strategies to build healthier communities
Create awareness of the vital services parks and recreation offers
Enhance the overall health and livability of your community
The application for 2011 communities will open in the fall of 2010.
2009 ACHIEVE Communities:
NRPA was selected as a national partner for chronic disease prevention and health promotion by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2009 NRPA funded ten communities at $30,000 to focus and advance chronic disease prevention locally.
The 2009 NRPA ACHIEVE Healthy Communities are:
Montgomery County Parks and Recreation, Montgomery, AL
La Mirada Community Services, La Mirada, CA
North Miami Parks and Recreation Department, North Miami, FL
Davenport Parks and Recreation, Davenport, IA
Chicago Park District, Chicago, IL
O'Fallon Parks and Recreation, O'Fallon, MO
Greenville County Recreation District, Taylors, SC
Pierre Parks and Recreation, Pierre, SD
Longview Parks and Recreation, Longview, WA
Lynnwood Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts, Lynnwood, WA
NRPA is one of four national organizations partnered together with the CDC to promote the goals of ACHIEVE Healthy Communities at the local level. The 2009 NRPA/ACHIEVE Healthy Communities Demonstration Sites represent ten of the forty three communities nationwide that were selected to receive funding in 2009.
The funding represents a three year commitment to help the ten park and recreation agencies to affect significant change in their communities by working with local government and community organizations to implement a coordinated chronic disease prevention and health and wellness plan through policy, systems and environmental change strategies.
The grant award received from the CDC will also assist NRPA in developing online education and training modules that can be accessed by all local park and recreation agencies.
